Topical Conversations

Topical Conversations

What are the "frequently encountered problems" (FEPs) that impede the teaching, learning and performance of children who are d/hh? What can we do to resolve these FEPs?

We learn what we need when we need it. That is, when we have a problem, or a question, we search for a solution, or an answer. This problem based, "just-in-time," learning model reflects the day-to-day realities of parenting and teaching children who are deaf/hard of hearing (d/hh). Unfortunately, most of us must work in isolation as we discover and attempt to address the "Frequently Encountered Problems" (FEPs) that impede parenting, teaching, learning, and performance of children who are d/hh. The purpose of this section of the Deaf Education Web site is to identify, understand, explore and address these FEPs. Each month, starting in mid September of 2012, a collaborative team of parents, teachers and researchers will lead topical conversation of a different FEP. The goal of these conversations is to share what we know and learn what we need to enhance the performance of children who are d/hh.

FEPs have already been identified by a large group of Master Teachers of students who are d/hh and several classes of Michigan State University Deaf Education Majors. YOU are now requested to submit YOUR top "Frequently Encountered Problem" (FEP) by simply "Clicking" on this "Feedback" button. Please share: 1) a phase that describes the problem, e.g., "Students do not like to read;" 2) a brief (i.e., 1-3 sentence) description of why you think the problem occurs; and 3) a brief (i.e., 1-3 sentence) description of how you address the problem. The resulting FEPs will be summarized and posted on this page of the "Deaf Education" Web site during the course of the next several months. In late summer, early fall, Web site users will be asked to note which of the FEPs cause them the most difficulty in enhancing the performance of children who are d/hh. Once ranked, each month, collaborative teams will lead online topical conversations of different FEPs, starting with the one that is frustrating to the greatest number of individuals. These conversations, in turn, will serve to not only document, describe and understand the FEPs, but also "pool" our knowledge base of "what works" to enhance the performance of children who are d/hh. The conversations will also serve to facilitate the development of collaborative teams to "try out" and empirically investigate suggested FEP solutions. The resulting FEP conversations and collaborative investigations will then be added to a growing "knowledge base" of problem based learning for the field of Deaf Education.

Reduce the isolation! Share your ideas! Together we CAN make a difference!
